HSGWAG. Helmdon, Stuchbury and Greatworth Wind Farm Action Group
About us
The Helmdon, Greatworth and Stuchbury Wind Farm Action Group
(HSGWAG) was formed in February 2010. We represent a large number of
village residents who oppose the plan to build five 125 metre high
industrial scale wind turbines in the unspoilt countryside between the
villages of Helmdon & Greatworth in South Northamptonshire.
The group recognises that measures need to be taken to reduce
man-made contributions to climate change and accept that this can best
be achieved by reducing consumption on the one hand and utilizing
reliable, carbon free methods of electricity generation on the other.
Having considered evidence and opinions from many sources, the group
is sceptical about the current government policy of promoting a massive
expansion of land-based wind farms throughout the United Kingdom. We
believe that land-based wind farms can make a meaningful contribution
only when sited where the average wind speed allows them to operate
at a reasonable level of efficiency. This precludes much of lowland
Britain.
Furthermore, we consider that onshore wind farm developments should
be approved only where they will cause minimal environmental damage
and will not have a significant negative visual impact on the landscape
or on human habitation nearby.
The group believes that the likely contribution of the Spring Ridge Wind
Farm to the cause of carbon free electricity generation will not justify the
major impact which the scheme would have on the small-scale landscape
between the villages of Helmdon and Greatworth and the unspoilt
countryside and conservation land around it.
The Group has formed a committee chaired by local resident Keith Jones
to enable our opposition to the plans to be managed in both a structured
and coordinated fashion. The committee will regularly consult with local
residents to provide information on the latest developments and take
account of local feedback and offers of support.
