Local Ecology

Our villages are lucky to be situated in the middle of a landscape that has evolved and yet changed little in living history. If Broadview Energy build turbines on the Spring Farm Ridge site, it could have a dramatic impact on some of our most treasured wildlife and habitats.

There are 3 specific areas of impact :

Loss of important habitat

Displacement through indirect loss of habitat

Collision risk

There is much debate about the third point, collision risk. Larger birds, especially the raptors are killed by collision, but bats (a highly protected species) are killed by the sudden expansion of their lungs causing capillaries to burst, due to the pressure differences created by rotating blades.

As part of the planning application, Broadview must carry out an environmental assessment. This will inform them and SNC whether there are any endangered species on the site. The presence of an endangered species is not by itself necessarily a reason for rejection, but it could impact the proposal if the findings are significant.

HSGWAG are currently carrying out a survey in order to compile its own ecological report. There are 4 protected species that we are currently very keen to investigate further; bats, great crested newts, badgers and water voles. If you spot any of these animals around the site, please pass your findings on to either:
